Classical Theatre Lab and the City of West Hollywood present the Neil Armfield and Geoffrey Rush translation of Eugene Ionesco’s “Exit the King,” an absurdist play about the inevitability of death. “Exit the King” tells the story of King Berenger the First, who was rumored to be more than 400 years old and at one time was able to command nature and force others to obey his will. He has just been told that he is dying and his kingdom is crumbling around him. In deep denial, he refuses to relinquish the throne. That we are all mortal, regardless of how much we deny it, is the foundation for this Ionesco classic. Directed by CTL member and Artistic Coordinator, Michael Matthys. Featuring Alexander Wells as the King; Ellyn Stern, Queen Marguerite; Gina Manziello, Queen Marie; Joe Hulser, The Doctor; Amy Handelman, Juliette; and Joseph Beck, The Guard. Creative staff for “Exit the King” includes: Susan Deeley Wells, set designer; Jeffrey Porter, lighting designer; Bill Froggatt, sound designer; Doug Spesert, costume designer; Michael Frank, stage manager; and Amy Clites, producer. |
